For this assignment we will be recreating the popcorn movie poster from the image displayed. How will we do this? You guessed it, follow the instructions below and watch the instructor demonstrate.
Instructions:
Step One:
- Start with the Popcorn image.
Select the image (Control+A) and delete the background with the delete key. -
Copy and paste into a new document in Photoshop.
(Control+C, Control+V) - Rename the layer "popcorn".
- Select the white background with the Magic Wand tool and inverse the selection.
(Control+Shift+I)
*Important: you must have the layer selected that you want to edit. - Select all (Control+A) the layer "Background" and fill the area with color.

Step Two:
- Start with the Kernels image.
Use the Magic Wand to select the background.
Inverse the selection (Control+Shift+I).
Copy and paste (Control+C, Control+V) into a the Popcorn document.
- Duplicate the kernel layer using the menu (Edit > Duplicate Layer).
Repeat until you have enough kenels to match the poster.
Use the menu to scale the kernel (Edit > Transform > Scale)
Hold the Shift key while scaling and hit the Enter key to make the scale take effect.
*Important: you must have the layer selected that you want to edit. - Rename each layer of Kernels to "kernel1", "kernel2", etc. as you go.
*Double click on the layer in the Layers palette.

Step Three:
- Start with the Rogue Valley Messenger logo image.
Click on the logo below to access the large version.
Right click the image and select "Save Image As" and save to the desktop.
- Use the menu to open the logo (File > Open > Desktop > logo.png).
Copy and Paste (Control+C, Control+V) the logo into the popcorn document. - Rename the layer to "logo".
Use the menu to scale the kernel (Edit > Transform > Scale)
Hold the Shift key while scaling and hit the Enter key to make the scale take effect.
Use the Move tool to move the layer behind the "popcorn" layer.
*Important: you must have the layer selected that you want to edit.

Step Four:
- On the "popcorn" layer use the Lasso tool to select the text in the circle of the popcorn box.
*Important: you must have the layer selected that you want to edit. - Use the Eyedropper tool to select the white color and fill the selection with that color.
- Use the Text tool to replace the text with the new words on the poster.
- Save the results as a .jpg with your name to the desktop of your computer.
(i.e., "YourName.jpg")
